On Starting Small

I’ve always had the problem that I have too many thoughts going on at the same time that its hard to stay focused. I know I’m not alone in this. I feel like I don’t get much done, and then the feeling of being overwhelmed is not far off. Even if it started as eager, positive energy, it soon dissipates. The motivation and inspiration to be your best self slips into bad habits and easier actions, or even just general fatigue.

What’s far more powerful? Small ideas and small actions, carried out with enthusiasm and discipline ignite the courage and momentum needed to tackle bigger tasks. They build your confidence and sharpen your focus. They show you what you’re capable of even in the midst of your biggest self doubts. The beauty of small steps is that they don’t have to be perfect (really no steps do, but it’s hard to feel that way sometimes). They’re less daunting and less paralyzing if they become failures. Realistically you don’t even perceive them as a failure.

Whether its a work related task, a new health or fitness goal, a conversation you’ve been dreading because you don’t know how it will go, break it down into the smallest, most feasible decision you can make. Keep the end goal in mind, but take the first step that you do have clear in your mind and watch where it takes you.

  1. I love this! I also get overwhelmed really easily, especially if I have a lot to do. Often I’ll forget about my to do list for the day and just take one tiny step towards my goal.
